The White-tailed black cockatoo got its name from a naturalist named Ivan Carnaby. This charming black bird weighs between 520–790 grams and has a slight white feathers on its tail and a prominent patch of cream-white feathers on its cheek. You can distinguish a male short-billed black cockatoo from a female in that, the male has black beaks with pink rings on their eyes while the female has a white beak and grey circles round the eyes. The White-tailed black cockatoo is often confused with the Baudin’s black cockatoo however you can separate one from the other by their shorter and broader beak.
In the wild, the Carnaby’s black cockatoo is always spotted in a large flock of more than 70 birds and they live in areas with high amount of rainfall. This cockatoo parrot is very intelligent and when moving in flocks, one or two of them stay behind to give signal to the others incase of any danger. This bird specie feed on seeds, nuts, flower lowers and nectar, pine cones and fruit. This cockatoo is monogamous in nature and when they mate, the bond for life with their partner, breeding takes place between June, September and November. The female bird lays one to two eggs and incubates them for four weeks, during this period the male cockatoo goes out to fetch for food and also nest the female cockatoo and the young chicks and as soon as they fletch, they female and baby cockatoo move out to join the others.
The White-tailed black cockatoo is a semi-migratory bird and they migrate to the Wheatbelt to breed, they begin breeding from four years of age and mate for life. They breed in smooth-barked eucalypts like Wandoo and Salmon Gum.
