Eclectus Bird Care and Feeding

Eclectus parrots are very energetic and needs ample amount of time outside of their cage to play and strengthen their feathers, this bird should be provided with a large cage with enough space to move and play around, some play toys should also be made available to keep its beak busy. This bird will make a perfect companion for any household and they prefer a calm environment with little or no noise. In the wild, Eclectus birds feed mostly on pomegranate, papaya, and figs, seeds, fresh fruits and vegetables, while in captivity it is recommended that you provide them with homemade casserole, Cooked pasta or grain bake.

Color and Marking

With the eclectus bird, it is quite easy to distinguish the male from the female just by looking at their physical traits. The female eclectus birds are predominantly brilliant red with black beaks and purple markings on their chests and tails, while the males are green with bright orange beaks and splashes of crimson and blue under their wings.

Breeding

In the wild, Eclectus parrots nest in large tree holes, within this period, the female protects the nesting spot, Up to five males will routinely provide food for the female, with each contending with the others for her attention and the right to father her young. Males can travel up to 20 kilometres to forage. Eclectus parrots are polygynandrous, which makes them unique among parrot species; females may mate with a number of male suitors, and males may move from nesting site to nesting site to mate with a number of females.
